Gee Whiz, Mark. Now What?

Mark Regev, a spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, said Thursday’s firing showed that the Palestinians were improving their ability to use the weapon and to exploit its range, which could endanger a quarter of a million Israelis, and he called on Egypt to do more to stop the smuggling of weapons into Gaza.

It’s a sign of things to come and an issue of great concern,” Mr. Regev said. “These rockets are not homemade and are smuggled in, and our concern is not one or two Katyushas, but a whole range of weapons, including antitank and antiaircraft rockets.”

Mark, ask your PM, not the Egyptians, for what to do.

Go ask Netanyahu, go ask Limor Livnat, Steve Shalom, Yuval Steinitz (the biggest hypocritd of them all) etc. They all voted for it KNOWING what would happen. This proves they are irresponsible people and unworthy of being in power.

I think Bibi resigned at the last moment and did not vote for the final phase so, while most assuredly a coward, he didn't actually vote for the evacuation/expulsion.

You are quite right about Netanyahu, but I simply view it as a cynical move on his part. He knew what would happen and wanted to be able to say that he went against it at the end.
To tell the truth, I don't hate him as much many others in our camp do. He actually was not a bad Prime Minister, but I feel that if he were elected again he would be in a bad fix. He would not be able to form a "right-wing" gov't like he did in 1996 because he has repeatedly stated he has learned from his "mistakes" (i.e. going against what the Leftist oligarchy wants), and I am not sure the Haredi parties would want to be part of such an alignment either, knowing that they would become the brunt of much of the attack of the Left...don't forget that in both 1992 and 1999 the Left won the elections by saying that the Likud "sold the country out to the Haredim". That is one reason Sharon didn't want a coalition dependent on them.
In addition, if Netanyahu did form such a gov't (or even if he formed a gov't with the Left), I am sure that as a big-time womanizer, it wouldn't be hard to do to him what they did to Katzav....drag out some bimbo from his past and pay her to accuse him publicly of rape. Remember, it doesn't have to be true, just so long as they get a lot of mileage in the media from the accusation. Olmert is a good man for the Left and yet they are after him with investigations and accusations, too. The oligarchs want whoever is in power to have these things hanging over them to ensure that they do what they want.

I believe that if the Likud were to win the election, they would form a gov't with Labor, Kadima (or whatever is left of it) and the Haredim. This is the coalition Sharon used to destroy Gush Katif. Netanyahu would be used as "front man" to keep the Right quiet, as Sharon did, and policy would be actually determined by the Left. This would be called "national unity", even though our camp would be disenfranchised.

I believe the "Annapolis process" will bog down by the time Bush's term will end, so the who "unilateral withdrawal" spectre will arise again and the coalition I outlined above would be the best one the Left could hope for in order to implement it by destroying more yishuvim and neutralizing right-wing protests against it ("after all we have to support Bibi, we don't want the Left in power, do we?").
