Jerusalem's Sidewalk Problem This Week

Here's a typical Jerusalem street view for this coming week:

The holiday of Succoth is upon us until next Monday, when Jews who are observant (and even those who are not) will be eating in booths, covered with some form of vegetation (see here).

However, while in your backyard, porch or balcony area this becomes quite tolerable and, for young kids, a great treat, in addition to fulfilling commandments, in a downtown area, restaurants, coffee houses and pizza parlors have a problem.

Where to place the Succah to facilitate your Orthodox guests?

On the sidewalk.

And so, when you have three eateries all within food fight distance of each other, the pedestrain becomes the victim and finds himself trying to escape traffic.

Jerusalem, the holy city.
