Pork, Jews and One Jew

Found here at Eric Asimov's blog on dining & wine at the...da-tum!, New York Times, promoting "Pork Roast and Riesling":

How does pork work with the Jewish thing?

Sorry, that might haved looked rude. The reason I ask is I have some good Jewish friends and always have had to avoid making pork for them. I’m OK with that but it’d be nice for me to make them a pork roast every now and then.

Peter,
As any good Jew knows, pork is a vegetable. Just kidding. As with all religions you have your ultra-observant types, your non-observant types and a beautiful rainbow in between.
— Eric Asimov

Leaving pork aside, Asimov sounds like a pig.

I apologize if I missed something obvious, but why are you calling the gentleman a pig?

He fairly observed that there are ultra-observant types, non-observant types and many types in between. He criticized NONE of those types... why are you being rude to him?

Thanks,
Fjedka

I wrote he "sounds like a pig". Not that he is. He's oinking, which to my ears is a horrible cross between a grunt and a screech.

He's being "cute" about religious beliefs.

Actually you're the one being cute about religous beliefs. Not everyone holds your beliefs, but that's no reason to criticize them.

He fairly and accurately observed (and relevantly, given the question he was asked about the pig and the jewish thing) that there are different types of observance amongst jews, including "non" observance.

As for the difference between "sounds like" and "is" ... don't you usually number yourself amongst the biggest critics of these type of Clintonesqe arguments? In any case both "sounds like a pig" and "is a pig" are undeservedly rude.

In general, you belittle your otherwise high quality and serious blog (about things like using "revenants" and not "settlers" etc.) when you stretch to be rude to non religous people, to gays, to female rabbis etc. A little more inclusiveness will make it more likely that your views will be paid attention to by others than just those who already agree with you.

Thanks for letting me speak my piece here,
Fjedka
