Hadassah Convoy Massacre Memorial

Friday, April 8, 2011 at 10:30 AM:

If you demonstrate at the Shimon HaTzaddik neighborhood that you might refer to as Sheikh Jarrah, you can come early and identify as humanists with the memory of the slaughter by Arabs of over 70 Jews, all of them Hadassah Hospital workers who dispensed medicine and health services to Arabs up until their deaths.

Meeting point is at Highway 1 at the corner of the Leonardo Hotel, formerly the Olive Tree.

Eliada Bar-Shaul will act as guide.  In Hebrew.

don't forget that the British army collaborated with the Arab attackers in several ways. By the way, before the Independence War, the Shimon haTsadiq Quarter was considered separate from the adjacent Sheikh Jarrah Quarter. However, the location of the memorial to the victims of the massacre in April 1948 is across the street from the Nashashibi mansion, a squarish looking 5 or 6 storey building with colorful tiles on the facade of the upper floor. The Nashashibis --a rich, leading Arab family-- left their home fairly early in the war, maybe already in December 1947.

The Nashashibi mansion is uphill from the road to Mt Scopus while the Shimon haTsadiq Quarter is downhill from the road. The Jewish inhabitants of Shimon haTsadiq were driven out at the end of December 1947-beginning of 1948 over a period of 10 or 12 days.
