US Warships in Region

The claim is they'll be used for possible evacuation:

U.S. sends warships near Israel in case evacuation needed

Three U.S. Navy amphibious warships are returning to the eastern Mediterranean to remain on standby in the event they are needed to assist Americans leaving Israel in the coming days...the decision to send the ships even if the event is such a remote contingency underscores the growing concern about where the Israel-Gaza conflict could be headed...officials said the ships would be used only for assisting Americans and not for any combat role.

The most immediate impact will be on the ships' crews and the estimated 2,500 Marines on board...

Maybe the do have offensive capabilities that could be employed?

the US would evacuate Americans from – what, Gaza? Clearly not from Israel – in the coming days. US Marines going into Gaza to rescue Americans would constitute interference.

Americans trapped in Gaza, but not actively being detained by Hamas, could and should flee through Egypt, which is the right place to pick them up, and there’s no need for the Marines to do it. T
