Meet the 'civil society practitioners'

How does America assist the Arab world?

Here's Tara Sonenshine, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, from January 16, 2013:-

Since the beginning of the Arab Spring, we have supported the fast growing numbers of civil society practitioners in transitioning countries. We do that primarily through our U.S. Middle East Partnership Initiative – or MEPI.

In Egypt, for example, MEPI has supported training for more than 1,500 NGO staff members and activists through 50 workshops on using social media to develop advocacy and public outreach. MEPI has also partnered with Microsoft to provide free wireless Internet access and training to Libyans in rural and marginalized communities.

Lovely.

Remind me, from where did those Al-Qeida terrorist in Algeria come from?

Appearing Wednesday before a Senate hearing, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that weapons used in the attack came from neighbouring Libya.

"There is no doubt that the Algerian terrorists had weapons from Libya. There is no doubt that the Malian remnants of AQIM have weapons from Libya," she said, referring to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the regional affiliate of the al-Qaeda network.

The Algerian daily El Watan reported that 29 of the 32 kidnappers were recruited in Libya while Agence France-Presse quoted “a source very close to extremist groups” in Libya stating that they had provided logistical support to the terrorist raid last week on the In Amenas gas complex.
